Descripción
El cemento es un aglutinante hidráulico, es decir, cuando se mezcla con agua forma una pasta que fragua y endurece (propiedades hidráulicas). Se utiliza en forma de polvo para hacer hormigón o mortero.
Los cementos se pueden clasificar en cinco familias principales y 27 variantes principales (ver norma EN-197-1-2000) para más detalles:
Cemento Portland (clasificación CEM I)
Compuesto de cemento Portland (clasificación CEM II)
Cementos de alto horno (clasificación CEM III)
Cementos puzolánicos (clasificación CEM IV)

Cemento de alúmina
El cemento aluminoso fue inventado por J. Bied, director cientÃfico de Ciments Lafarge, en 1908 y producido industrialmente en Francia a partir de 1918. Es un cemento a base de aluminatos de calcio. Los cementos Portland contienen silicatos de calcio. Estos aluminatos no liberan cal durante la hidratación y proporcionan varias propiedades especiales al hormigón o mortero de alúmina:

Alta resistencia quÃmica
Alta resistencia al desgaste
Resistencia a altas temperaturas
Un acelerador de fraguado para climas frÃos
cemento artificial
El cemento artificial, o cemento Portland, es una mezcla artificial (fabricada por el hombre) de 76 a 80 % de carbonato de cal y de 24 a 20 % de arcilla, molida y mezclada en bruto, luego horneada a una temperatura de 1450 °C para obtener una roca artificial dura, el clinker, nuevamente molido muy finamente, da el cemento artificial.
Es un cemento lento, producido en grandes cantidades desde alrededor de 1850, utilizado hoy en dÃa para hormigón común y hormigón armado, asà como para trabajos de alta tecnologÃa como puentes y carreteras o estructuras de ingenierÃa. Su larga y complicada fabricación lo encareció durante mucho tiempo. Fue imitado a bajo precio por lo que se puede llamar “falsificaciones artificiales”.
En 1897, la Materials Test Method Commission clasificó todos los cementos de fraguado lento en la misma categorÃa, y a partir de 1902, la Lime and Cement Commission dejó de utilizar este término artificial y lo incluyó en los cementos Portland.
Cemento blanco o extrablanco
El cemento blanco o extrablanco es un cemento portland sin óxido metálico (una especie de cal pesada), destinado a la fabricación de tejas o molduras. Destaca por su finura y blancura, sin producir grietas en la superficie lisa. Fue inventado en 1870. Se toma entre 6 y 15 horas.
Cemento quemado (o clinker)
El clinker, cocido a 1.450°C y aún sin moler, se puede utilizar como cemento, en cuyo caso hablamos de cemento cocido. Él es muy duro. Su fraguado es mucho más lento que los cementos moderadamente cocidos a 1000°C, pero presenta un endurecimiento y un grado de cohesión bastante extraordinarios.
Triturado y mezclado con yeso para retrasar el fraguado, es la base de la fabricación común de cementos ordinarios modernos (cemento Portland). En el siglo XIX, en Dauphiné, las piezas moderadamente cocidas, a menudo de color amarillo, se llamaban frittes o troncos amarillos. Las piezas recocidas se denominaron fritas negras. La palabra clinker, importada del Reino Unido, se utilizaba principalmente para designar las fritas negras de cemento portland artificial.

Los cementos de ceniza se fabricaron por primera vez en Francia en 1951, por P. Fouilloux.
cemento fundido
Cemento de principios del siglo XX, muy aluminoso, de fraguado normal, cuyo endurecimiento requiere mucha agua, desprende mucho calor y es muy rápido. Es indescomponible en aguas magnesianas y selenitas, se mezcla mal con otros cementos y es caro.
Cementos de uva
La producción de cementos de grappiers se inició alrededor de 1870. Los grappiers son los elementos duros que la acción del agua no puede convertir en polvo durante la extinción de la cal, y que los empernadores rechazan. Eran las calizas crudas, sobrecocidas, limÃtrofes y las partes muy cargadas de arcilla de las calizas margosas.
Suponiendo una pérdida importante para el fabricante, acabamos en Teil (Ardèche) para aprovecharla creando cemento de grappiers, cuya calidad podÃa ser notable. Este producto un tanto bastardo desapareció definitivamente del mercado con la guerra de 1914, pero se encuentra en los manuales de arquitectura de los años 30.
cemento de escoria
Cemento también llamado cemento puzolánico, obtenido a partir de escorias de alto horno mezcladas con cal grasa apagada y cal hidráulica.
La escoria, para adquirir potencia, debió enfriarse bruscamente a la salida del horno arrojándola al agua. Contiene sulfuros de calcio que se oxidan en el aire, lo que le da un tinte verde.
