Salt is an extremely abundant mineral in nature. It comes in the form of crystals. Depending on where and how it is produced, salt contains between 94% and 99% sodium chloride, other secondary salts (magnesium, potassium or calcium salts), water and insolubles.

Sodium chloride (NaCl) is made up of two ions :

chloride (Cl-) and sodium (Na +), in the proportion 60% / 40% approximately.

Salts can have various colors, for example :

o yellow (sodium chromate);
o orange (sodium dichromate);
o red (mercury sulphide);
o purple (cobalt dichloride hexahydrate);
o blue (copper sulfate pentahydrate, ferric hexacyanoferrate);
o green (nickel oxide);
o colorless (magnesium sulfate);
o white (titanium dioxide);
o and black (manganese dioxide). Most inorganic pigments and many synthetic organic dyes are salts.

Other names :

table salt, kitchen salt, sodium chloride.

Use :

Salt is a raw material available in almost unlimited quantities in the seas and in underground salt deposits. Many chemical sectors consume salt:
production of soaps and detergents, bleach, stationery, pharmaceutical industry, plastics sector, metallurgy …
