Description
Pozzolana is a rock of volcanic origin, friable and not very dense, of essentially basaltic composition. The term comes from Pozzuoli, an Italian city in the Naples region where, in Antiquity, this material was used extensively as a natural cement during Antiquity. It reveals a color ranging from black to red through gray depending on the degree of oxidation of the iron and has a honeycomb structure.
Fragments of magma (ash, lapilli, bombs, etc.) thrown into the atmosphere during volcanic eruptions and cooled during their aerial journey make up pozzolana. As this cooling is relatively rapid, amorphous and non-crystallized volcanic glass is one of the major components of pozzolan. The other constituents are magmatic minerals (feldspar, pyroxene, olivine, amphibole, iron oxide …) and xenoliths, foreign rocks in the middle torn from geological formations prior to volcanism.
Other names:
Another name of the Pozzolana is the Lapilli.
Use :
We use it for gardening, constructions, hemp concrete, aquariums and in soil-less agriculture to filter water because this stone is porous and constitutes a good bacterial support, non-collective sanitation and roads.
