Bentonite : Bentonite is a colloidal clay. We consider it to be a smectite, being essentially made up of montmorillonite (Na, Ca) 0.33 (Al, Mg) 2Si4O10 (OH) 2 (H2O) n (80%) which is a clay which explains its water retention capacity because montmorillonite is a particularly swelling type of smectite.

Other names : We also give it the term fuller’s earth or white clay.

Use : It has various properties. In particular, it absorbs proteins, reduces the activity of enzymes. Bentonite muds (containing a fraction of bentonite) are used as drilling muds in earthworks and diaphragm walls, due to their ability to quickly and easily give way to poured concrete in their place. They can be added to the compost.

It is mainly found in:
– plastic industry,
– cosmetic
– animal bedding,
– livestock feed,
– foundries,
– the oil drilling industry,

Abrasive, for example in toothpaste, is possible but also for metal polishing. It is a mild abrasive. natural and non-toxic pesticide, especially in organic farming: silica particles cause lesions in the digestive tract of insects, in particular cockroaches, and superficial lesions of the shell which lead to their death by dehydration. This method is also effective in eradicating bedbugs (see article).
Porous, it can be used as thermal insulation.

Kaolin

Kaolin and kaolin clays are clay rocks in which kaolinite is the predominant mineral phase. In addition, we can associate it with other minerals in variable proportions, directly influencing the properties of this clay, such as illite (flux), smectite (improves plasticity) or alumina hydrates (improves refractoriness) .

Other names: In English, it is also called “China Clay”.

Use

Accordingly, we use kaolin to enable the refined form of ceramic art, we mainly use it in the paper industry as a filler in the paper mass and as a surface coating. Finally, it is found in many areas:

papermaking,
ceramic,
fiberglass,
refractory,
admixtures for concrete
pharmaceutical and cosmetic use,
animal feed
sealant for rubber, paint, plastic

It makes it possible to reduce the amount of paper pulp, which is quite expensive, and improves the optical properties. Additionally, its whiteness increases the gloss and opacity of the paper surface, while the size and shape of the individual kaolin particles provide the gloss and print quality required for certain types of paper.

Rubber industry.
In addition, we use kaolin in the formulation of rubber compounds to improve abrasion resistance and mechanical strength. Besides, its whiteness makes it possible to obtain a clear base which can be colored by adding a pigment.

In medicine: We use kaolin as an activator to test plasma coagulability in certain biological tests (activated partial thromboplastin time).
Ingestion: It is also used as an antidiarrhoeal.

In the Middle East and Africa, kaolin is traditionally consumed, especially by pregnant women, probably due to deficiencies (especially zinc). This geophagy can lead to addiction and health issues such as anemia, constipation, and kidney problems.

In paint: we find it in many formulations of conventional or environmentally friendly paints and it also serves as the main filler for so-called “clay” paints.
Building: Kaolin can be used as a component in the manufacture of geopolymer cements.
Agriculture: Kaolin is a foliar product and we use it against sunburn in citrus orchards, also, the product has a repellent effect against certain harmful insects, as part of the biological control.

Expanded clay is a material manufactured industrially from natural raw clay. After several modifications and preparations, the final result is balls or blocks made from clay balls. It is a fairly heavy material with a density ranging from 300 to 700 kg / m3.

Other names: also known under the terms fired clay from pebbles, hydrocorns, laterite, or more simply “clay balls”. Expanded shale is a variant of clay obtained by firing suitable shales used in construction.

Use: it has very good sound insulation qualities, it acts effectively against airborne noise and impact noise. However, these skills are fairly average in terms of thermal insulation. this product has very good durability, is waterproof and resists fire, corrosives and insect attacks.

We can use it in:

construction (concrete and mortars: refractory, lightening, thermal insulation),

infrastructure,

water treatment,

the pot and the plants,

animal husbandry and hydroponics.
